The third lid is called a nictitating membrane or “haw” and keeps the eye lubricated and protected. Dog’s shoulder blades are not attached to the rest of the skeleton for flexibility. Puppies will sometimes be shunned by their mother when they are cleaned before the mother gets to see them. Dogs use their tails for communicating; they express happiness, aggression, stress and all of the emotions in between. By looking at the position and movement of the tail, you can usually tell what they are saying. When he wags his tail high and wags it back and forth, he's usually feeling pretty good; when he is interested in something, his tail is horizontal to the ground; a tucked tail indicates the dog is frightened or submissive; when the tail goes from horizontal to upright and rigid, he is feeling threatened or challenged; and a tail that is low and wagging just slightly means your dog is feeling worried or insecure.

The tail has another vital role in communicating. Every time your dog moves his tail, it acts like a fan and spreads his natural scent around him. One of his most important odors comes from the anal glands, two sacs under the tail that contain a smelly liquid that is as unique among dogs as fingerprints are to us. Every time the dog wags his tail, the muscles around the anus contract and press on the glands, causing a release of the scent. A dominant dog that carries his tail high will release much more scent than a dog that holds his tail lower. Likewise, a frightened dog holds his tail between his legs to keep others from sniffing him, so he does not draw attention to himself.

The tail is important as a means of counterbalance when the dog is carrying out complicated movements such as leaping, walking along narrow structures, or climbing. Dogs that run at great speeds usually have long thin tails in proportion to the rest of the body, and they use their tails as counterbalance when making turns. Their tails give them both agility and ability to turn quickly to keep up with their prey. Tail muscles are also important in stabilizing the vertebral column and supporting the action of the extensor muscles of the back as well as those of the croup and buttocks.

Some dogs also use their tails as rudders when swimming. Swimming dogs have tails that are thick, strong and very flexible, which helps them to move easily through the water and make quick turns.

Some dogs use their tails for insulation. Nordic breeds have brushy or plumed tails with long dense fur. When lying down they pull their tails over their faces to keep out the cold. They also use their tails as rudders when pulling a sled across the ice.

Handcrafted Round Boxes

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_iSV_LhZ1ILA/S4OBRRajifI/AAAAAAAAAAk/hO0kYWn8euU/s200/mx,xmas+09,luca,cushions,etc+108.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441334908526234098" />

If you or your friends are cat lovers, then this is for you!!!For more details visit http://www.amigosforever.com.au/dogtoys-pic-1.asp?s=45

Dog cushions

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_iSV_LhZ1ILA/S256hWYG99I/AAAAAAAAAAU/Zbz2OtBrSZg/s200/mx,xmas+09,luca,cushions,etc+119.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435416513643739090" />
This cushion features the cutest dogs - and it's also soft and cuddly as a puppy. They cannot distinguish between red, orange, yellow or green. They can see various shades of blue and can differentiate between closely related shades of gray that are not distinguishable to people.

When comparing dog and human vision, people are better at depth perception, color perception and seeing minute details of an object. Dogs are better at seeing in dim light, responding to an image rapidly and detecting the slightest motion. They also have better peripheral vision.

In a 1995 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, researchers dissected canine retinas and found many color-sensitive cones that indicated that there was at least an anatomical potential for color vision in dogs.

The researchers also used behavioral discrimination testing and electrical photo tests to determine the light wavelengths that stimulated these cones. The dogs in the study could not differentiate between middle-to-long wavelengths of light, which to people appear as green, yellow, orange or red.

Dogs are able to differentiate between various shades of blue and violet, shades that people cannot tell apart. It is theorized that people have a yellow pigment in the lens of their eye that blocks short wavelengths (blue) light and significantly reduces sensitivity to violet and blue light. Dogs do not have this yellow pigment and therefore can see very subtle color changes.

If you are feeling curious, you can try testing your own dog to see if he can tell one shade of color from another. First, try to teach your dog that a blue towel always elicits a positive response. Then put out a green, a red and a blue towel and see if they pick the right color. This is a very crude test but it may work.
